Law enforcement officers attend human trafficking workshop

Criminal Investigation Detectives and police prosecutors in NCD will now have in-depth knowledge on how to detect, assess and successfully prosecute cases of human trafficking in the country.

A workshop currently being facilitated by the International Organization for Migration, in conjunction with the department of Justice and Attorney-General and the office of the Public Prosecutor, is helping those law enforcement frontline officers combat human trafficking and people smuggling in PNG.

The workshop focuses on detecting case of trafficking, how to identify victims, carrying out proper assessment for trafficking, doing safe referrals of victims of trafficking and prosecuting those cases in court.

The three-day workshop will see IOM take police investigators and prosecutors through the elements of human trafficking and people smuggling and how they can prove trafficking offences.

The workshop started yesterday with IOM going through case studies and how to differentiate trafficking from smuggling.

A session on criminal proceedings and prosecution was carried out today to aid investigators on essential evidence needed to prosecute cases.

This is the eighth workshop being carried out by IOM since it started the series of workshops in May.
