Lae Police boss warns Unitech students to beware of opportunists

Metropolitan Superintendent for Lae, Anthony Wagambie Jnr had a meeting with the student leaders and the administrations of Unitech yesterday afternoon after some people tried to cause chaos in the Unitech campus.

Wagambie Jnr told provincial heads that although they regret what happened in Port Moresby, it is understandable why students would act this way but frustration must not be taken out on the general public.

“Lae is a volatile area and known for mass rioting and destruction so when it comes to such instances where students are to lead such unplanned and un- sanctioned protest, it would lead opportunist in taking advantage”, he told them.

The students must not see Lae police as their enemy as police are not doing this to suppress or  intimidate them but to ensure that there is normalcy for all Lae residents.

Police will not be entering the Unitech campus unless they are called by the administration, meaning that students must not destroy property within the campus, the buildings and infrastructures are there to serve them in their education’ He  added that people from the settlement might be the ones causing the problems under the guise of being Unitech students so they must identify them and remove them from campus.

Wagambie Jnr has appealed to student leaders to take control over the student body and for students not to venture out onto the main road interrupting traffic and causing disturbances to the public.
