Lae commuters have feel of highway

Commuters in Lae city got a feel of what it will be like to travel on the new four-lane Lae-Nadzab highway when using one section of the highway today when it was first opened up for public use.

Contractor China Railway International allowed the public to use the left-lane between Wau-Bulolo junction and Five-Mile after it was completed.

This was to allow the contractor to concentrate on the other lane.

The completed lane was all sealed and marked; with drainage, footpaths and signposts all in order.

The Nine-Mile bridge, which falls between Wau-Bulolo junction and Five-Mile, is still under construction.

Five-Mile to One-Mile is also still being constructed.

"At least the bigger fraction of the road under construction was opened up," said Able Turu, a PMV driver.

Another commuter John Kewa said it was a relief to save his ute from further deterioration after driving on the road everyday to go to work in town.

Earlier on the contractor said work was within budget and on target.
