Kokoda Track operations to be tightened

A review into the operations of Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) will be done to tighten loopholes, says minister responsible for tourism, Justin Tkatchenko.

Tkatchenko said the alleged incident that happen at the Kokoda trail was because KTA were conned into issuing the two expatiate couples trek permits to walk the 96km track.

“They con their way into so that is the problem, we will look into KTA.

“So we must prevent it happening again in the future, that is why will be doing a review of Kokoda Track Authority.

“Because if the permit were not issued, and cross checks and balance were taken seriously they will not have trekked the Kokoda Track.

“We have to look at the process and management and make sure it does not happen again,” he said.

He added that the track has always been safe for walkers and this is an isolated incident.

“I do not think it is a serious security check on the track.”

KTA objective is to promote for tourists, while improving the lives of villagers along the track through funding and development programs.

It is also responsible to issue trekking permits for walkers.
