Kiwi lifter in ‘cannibal’ controversy heads home

The New Zealand weight lifter in the middle of a “cannibalism” controversy at the 15th Pacific Games in Port Moresby has withdrawn from his team and flew back home today.

New Zealand Olympic Committee spokesperson Ashley Abbott says they are disappointed as his comments were very inappropriate.

“The young man is very apologetic and he has apologised and is back home now,” she says.

Douglas Sekone-Fraser posted a picture, his ‘selfie’ and that of some traditional dancers on Instagram.

 Under his selfie he wrote:

Under the picture of traditional dancers he wrote:

Abbott says the comments are insensitive and do not represent views of the New Zealand team or that of the wider New Zealand community in PNG.
