Kimbe Police barracks deteriorating

While the public criticizes the Police force about brutality, strong arm tactics and lack of discipline, the welfare standards of Police are easily overlooked.

The Kimbe Police barracks house are badly run down and unfit for habitation.

Houses currently occupied by officers were built in the 60s for Public Health Department (PHD) staff but were later handed over to the Police Department.

The barracks has 31 houses but one was burnt some years ago, due to electrical fault and has never been rebuilt.

Most of the houses are run down, with overflowing septics, blocked toilets and sinks, rotten floors leaking roofs, and broken rotting walls.

The last repairs were done in 2007 by FM Construction.

Few reports provided by the Provincial Health Environment Officers declared the habitation unfit for humans, after cases of dysentery and diarrhea occurred in the late 90s.

Most houses have dug pits for septic flow to transfer as the Department didn't have funds to pay the Dept of Works for the use of their pump out honey sucker vehicle.

Domestic waste is also being dumped in pits dug either at the front or backyard as town authority at times do not collect their rubbish.

In a Province where crime rate and other social issues have risen the past years, the Police barracks is a sight for sore eyes, and Officers are calling on the Government to step in and assist with renovation.

In 2000 under the administration of late PSC Tom Wapipi, there was a plan for new Police  Barracks to be built at the back of Section 21 past the Kimbe Grammer School and towards the Wabag City area, however this has since been shelved.

Another plan was to relocate the Barracks to Section 1 at Gigo where there is a small barracks so the Health Department could renovate or rebuild staff housing on the current area housing Police.

The current state of houses indicate major repair works or at most demolishing and rebuilding all houses.
