Kerema girls try out for national soccer teams

Young female soccer players from the Kerema Soccer Association in Gulf Province had the opportunity to try out for the national U17 and U20 teams recently.

This was part of PNG Football Association talent Identification program, giving young women the opportunity to show their soccer talent.

The program was run by PNGFA women's football development officer Frederica Sakette and national U20 assistant coach Margaret Aka.

Two stations were set up with three football activities taught by two coaches at each station.

Dribbling, passing and shooting were among the basic skills the young women learned before they put them into action with some games to close out the program.

Aka thanked the Gulf Governor Havila Kavo for organizing the trip and his support for sports in the province.

"I can see that there's potential in Gulf Province but if we have good competitions and development programs, women's football in Kerema will definitely benefit,” Aka said.

The event was to give women from Gulf the chance to play football, while also serving as an opportunity to do some scouting for the upcoming OFC U-17 Women's Championship and the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup next year.
