Kanye's new album fires TIDAL to US App Store summit

TIDAL is nowhere close to challenging Spotify in terms of subscriber figures, but the launch of Kanye West's latest album has fired the service to the top of the US App Store chart.

Yeezy's announcement that The Life of Pablo is exclusive to Jay Z's streaming platform saw the app shoot up 258 places on the American App Store rankings last Sunday (February 14).

Data from analytics firm App Annie suggests that TIDAL also climbed a staggering 437 places on the UK App Store chart, peaking at number 17.

Despite Kanye's efforts to make The Life of Pablo exclusive to TIDAL, reports suggest that the record racked up half a million illegal downloads on piracy websites within a couple of days.

Getting The Life of Pablo to release has been an uphill struggle, with the album's name and tracklisting going through several rewrites, including a last-minute reshuffle on Saturday morning that West blamed on Chance the Rapper.

Over its 18 tracks, Yeezy is joined by performers including Chance, Rihanna, Frank Ocean, Ty Dolla $ign, Young Thug and The Weeknd.
