Journalists learn about censorship roles and responsibilities

Ten journalists from various media organisations now know that the Censorship office plays the role of protecting the moral fabric of society from erosion through the influence of television and other mediums of communication.

This is after a 2 day workshop on Censorship Awareness and Media partnership.

The workshop started on Thursday November 12 and ended yesterday afternoon at the March Girls Resort in Gaire, Central Province.

The workshop outlined the roles and responsibilities of the Censorship Office.

One lesson learnt was that in the entertainment industry the Censorship office is responsible for checking and rating the content for all the movies that come into the country.

Movies that have too much violence or have too many sexual scenes or obscene language are rejected and can even be banned from the country.

This is the same for music.

The Censorship Office says in order for the country to learn more about censorship the media, especially journalists, must show interest and learn about their roles and responsibilities.

Fidelis Sukina, a reporter with the Sunday Chronicle, says the workshop has helped him understand what the Censorship office  does.

He hopes similar workshops will be held.

“I know more about this agency than I did before," he says.
