Ipatas Cup grand final to hype Wabag

Papua New Guinea's biggest off season rugby tournament will end this week when the top four teams battle it out in Wabag this weekend.

The Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup has Olco Butterflies, Wabag Laimas, Kamkumung Crushers and Okapa Hawks set for play offs on Saturday with the grand final on Sunday at Aipus Oval.

Chief Executive Officer Timothy Lepa said all the scheduled matches around the country were completed over the past months with two top teams from each pool remaining for the major finals.

Olco Butterflies and Wabag Laimas are from the Western pool while Kamkumung Crushers and Okapa Hawks from the Eastern pool.

Lepa confirmed this week that the finals are set for this weekend to conclude another successful season.

Following this weekend's finals, an Enga Mioks train-on squad will be announced. The CCIC has  been the recruiting ground for the Mioks over the years. The squad will go straight into camp in preparation for the 2016 Digicel Cup season which begins in a fortnight.

A bumper crowd is expected in the Engan capital as supporters gather to cheer their teams.

Enga Governor and CCIC patron Sir Peter Ipatas will officiate at the grand final, together with sponsors and club officials.

This is the 15th year the CCIC has been running, an initiative of the Enga Governor. Some of PNG's stars in the semi-professional clubs and the PNG Hunters have been exposed through the CCIC over the years.
