Investigations slow over car chase killing

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi says the lack of urgency by police station commanders in providing names of officers involved in the high speed chase of the late Nelson Rema is the main reason for slow investigations.

As a result those involved are yet to be identified.

Turi says he is disappointed at the slowness and has put in a strong word with investigators to speed up their work.

He has promised this case and all others will be dealt with and closed by early next year.

Rema, 25, was driving a vehicle carrying his aunt and his brother on November 26 when a “high speed car chase” ensued, ending in his death at Waigani.

Both his aunt and brother claim they were unlawfully wounded by policemen. His aunt also told reporters she was forced to drink a policeman’s urine, a claim Commissioner Gary Baki has since denied through a statement.
