Industry commends Works Department for prompt response

The Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has praised the Morobe Provincial Works Department for their prompt response during the 11-Mile bridge situation at the weekend.

The Department moved swiftly to erect a temporary crossing when the Arafin Bridge was washed away due to heavy rains last Saturday.

“Excellent work by the Department of Works in Morobe Province,” said Alan McLay, LCCI president.

“This (the bridge) will take a load of 44 ton. As it is only single lane, drivers are to approach it with caution.

“Give way signs will be erected so please take note and follow accordingly.”

The temporary bridge was opened for public use midday yesterday.

Motorists moved in a snail’s pace to access the one-lane bridge after 48 hours of being stranded on either side of the washed out underground culvert.

Department of Works Secretary David Wereh said work on a permanent bridge will start following the completion of the one-lane temporary bridge.
