Impressive start to PNG Fashion week

The inaugural PNG fashion week kicked off yesterday with an impressive start.

Day one of the three-day workshop hosted at the Holiday Inn attracted participantof all ages and representatives from both government and private sectors.

Director of the PNGFW Janet Sios was particularly impressed with the speakers and turnout of participants for the first day.

“I have to say that I’m impressed because the calibre of speakers that made the time to come shows that everybody is interested about the beginning of a new era in the industry,” she said.

The workshop covered topics including Sewing Skills, Small Medium Enterprise, linking indigenous fashion with Tourism, Access to Finance and Youth Empowerment.

Participating designers for the runway to be staged this Saturday also had an opportunity to briefly highlight their designs and business.

Today will see topics such as intellectual properties presented by the Investment Promotion Authority, Communication, Online Marketing, Garment Making and more. Friday will see international guest speaker Fai LepouPeni, director of the Pacific Runway present from the view of international runway.

“I’m happy with the turnout and I’m happy with the presenters and we’re excited about the few days of workshop that we’ve lined up for them,” Sios said.

PNG Fashion week is a concept aimed to capture one whole week of fashion, art and culture.

However, director Sios says, this being the first week will only be a four day event.

“It’s our first one, so we’ve given them three days workshop and the fourth one with the show. Next year, we want to do a full week, arts, culture at the beginning, fashion at the end and that’s the way forward.”
