Hunters Academy begins in NCD

Youths from the Port Moresby Rugby Football League can now train in an academy created under the initiative of PNG Hunters coach Michael Marum.

Former Lahanis captain and Hunters assistant coach Nigel Hukula said: “Basically, it’s a small training academy where youths from the Port Moresby Rugby League, between the ages of 16 to 20 years old, are invited to come.

“They attend the basic tackling techniques, ball patterns and training drills which are conducted by our trainers and also, we give the opportunity to the players to conduct drills and training.

“We believe it is important for young and upcoming rugby league players to acquire these skills and techniques given the fact that most of the boys are still in school but they also play rugby league,” said Hukula.

"Marum, during his time with the Gurias, also set up a similar academy and a lot of the current Digicel Cup players and few Hunters players were part of that program.

“It’s a pilot program and we are starting here in the Nation’s Capital but nothing big at the moment. We’ll just run it for a couple of months and see how it goes.”
