Human Rights Film Festival creates discussion

The Moresby Arts Theatre played host to the 7th Papua New Guinea Human Rights Film Festival (PNGHRFF) opening in Port Moresby last night.

With the theme for this year, ‘Forgetting Not My Rights' ~ Noken Lus Tingting Long Raits Bilong Mi, local films depicting human rights stories like “The tale of the coconut”, “Illeksen" as well as “The Story of Human Rights” were screened.

A panel discussion was held after the screening of the films to discuss Papua New Guinea’s arts, culture and politics.

Questions on how PNG’s culture has changed over time, cultural practices, young people obligation to protect cultural traditions, what role can film/art/creativity/performance play in the PNG and what role can it play in the Human Rights discourse were discussed with in-depth talks and knowledge.

The European Union has supported the Film Festival in Port Moresby since its inception.

This is an opportunity to look at the current situation in Papua New Guinea and what can be done to further implement human rights in those key areas.

According to humanrightsfimnetwork.org, the Film Festival promotes greater respect, protection and fulfillment of human rights for all and creates a forum for debate to empower the audience to end discrimination.

The film festival started last night and continue to Saturday night when it ends.
