Hubert Murray Stadium to be completed in October

Sir Hubert Murray Stadium at Konedobu in Port Moresby is on target to be fully completed in October this year in time to host the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Work will get underway on stage two of the facility in the coming weeks which includes the main grand stand, eight restaurants, a huge convention centre, a leagues club and doctor’s facilities.

Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko says the facility will still be used for events as the construction goes along.

He said a lot of the construction work for the prefabrication and manufacturing like the concrete seating and steel framework is done at Motukea and brought in and assembled.

The Public Private Partnership K120 million funding through the National Government and Curtain Brothers is ongoing.

“It’s a commitment that is solid and we will be working very closely with Curtain Bros to ensure they have their facilities finished on time.

“Curtain Bros is on target and we will ensure that the government has the funding backing them all the way to complete by October,” said Tkatchenko.

It will run and manage the stadium for 30 years and invest K60 million of its own money  into the project which is half of the contract value.

This will allow the stadium to be professionally managed and operated in the best interest of all users and the public.

Once completed, it will have a seating capacity of 20,000 and have multipurpose facilities to host any event in PNG.
