Gumine lockup gets help from Authority

The district lockup in Gumine, Chimbu Province is doing well with the support of the District Development Authority (DDA).

Jail Commander Corporal Joe Kaupa said so far the district has helped them to rehabilitate prisoners.

"The Gumine District Administrations has looked after us with logistics and resources. These include the purchase of a new Toyota Land Cruiser and the renovation of the lockup, “he told Loop PNG this week.

Corporal Kaupa said there are two lock-ups in the province. The other one is at Coglme, in the Kundiawa/Gembogl electorate.

These two rural lockups become the reserve holders from the main jail at Barowagi. Right now, there are eight low risk prisoners at Gumine rural lock-up.

He said they have prisoners from all over the country, especially on low risks. They don't accommodate those with high-risks, in case they cause problems including escaping.

"When we send these prisoners away, we will get new prisoners from Barowagi jail and this is a continuous arrangement between the district and CS," he said.

The Commander said there are four officers currently working under him and they enjoyed the tranquility and the beauty of Gumine.

He said the people are friendly and law abiding citizens of the country who sometimes assist them whenever they are in need.
