The successful growth of PNG’s fashion industry has given birth to another promising business – modelling.
This is evident over the few years where the fashion platforms are being set.
More young people, both male and female, are now either participating in one-off events or joining the increasing number of various model agencies within the country.
PNG Fashion Week, staged over the weekend, stood out as a platform to empower youths interested in modelling, regardless of size, shape, physical appearance, colour, place of origin or experience.
“I was amongst models that were from different parts of PNG and they were much younger than me and they had various characters,” Abraham Avediba, a male model at the inaugural runway, said when speaking of his experience as a first time model.
“Nonetheless, our team effort made me believe that we can do positive things despite the current trend of young ones engaging in unlawful conducts and having self-pity,” he said.
More than just a moment to show-off, his “challenging journey” has been “exciting and very rewarding at the end”.
“I’ve gained exposure, self-confidence and an in-depth understanding of the fashion industry, and most importantly, experience as a runway model,” Avediba said.
He had more to say about the industry and those pursuing a career in modelling.
“The modelling industry in PNG is still in its infant stage and it is gradually picking up pace to meet the standard of those in neighbouring countries like Fiji and Australia.
“But fact of the matter is that modelling opportunities are only present in major centres like Port Moresby, Lae and Rabaul, and not throughout the country.
“There are certain requirements that modelling agencies in Port Moresby and runway shows have when choosing one to become a model.
“On that note, the welfare of models is something that those who intend to take up a career in modelling need to consider seriously,” said Avediba.
“The money you get from modelling in PNG may not be what you consider to be ‘good’, but always remember that your attitude is what counts the most if you want to strive in this industry.
“Having the right attitude in wanting to learn, gain experience and respecting others around you is what will make you stand out from the crowd, whether you are a new model or an experienced one.”
