Goroka fight: Police meet community

Police met with the Okapa and Unggai groups at 1pm this afternoon and have given them until 8am tomorrow to hand over suspects in relation to the murder of a man that sparked fighting today.

On Friday, New Year’s Day, some drunken youths from the Unggai/Watabung block went to the Lufa/Okapa block and started assaulting people.

Two men were seriously injured during this clash.

In retaliation people from the Okapa/Lufa block mobilised and killed an Unggai man.

Police went there yesterday (January 2nd) and called for suspects to be handed over by today but this did not happen.

The fighting according to Sergeant Joseph Puang spilled out into the town given the proximity of the Genoka settlement area to the town area.

Sergeant Puan says that police are keeping a presence in the area with community leaders especially those from the Okapa and Unggai groups, have assured them that they will hand over the suspects.
