Glynn says accountability key to fight corruption

Founder of WeCARe, Fr John Glynn believes accountability and the acceptance of responsibility by those in power is one way to address corruption in the country.

Speaking after the launch of the 2015 Corruption Perceptions Index yesterday, Glynn said efforts so far to hinder corruption in PNG has had little effect.

“It looks as though we are stuck with it and forced to accept that it is a part of normal life in PNG.

“Instead of just seeking justice for those guilty of corruption, why don’t we demand that those in authority over corrupt ones accept responsibility for what their staff or subordinates are doing,” said Glynn.

Glynn went on to give an example of the 33rd President of the United States, Harry Truman who kept a sign on his desk that said “The Buck Stops Here”.

“The President was making it clear that he was the one who was finally accountable for everything that happened under his area of responsibility.

“In PNG, the buck stops nowhere. There is no one in the government or the public service that is prepared to stand up and accept responsibility for corruption taking place under their watch.

“This must change. We must not tolerate corruption. Accountability and the acceptance of responsibility do not imply guilt at all. It is actually the mark of true leadership,” said Glynn.

He added that until the people hold their leaders accountable and responsible, we will all continue to live with corruption.
