Game of Thrones season seven may be delayed for winter weather

For a show known famously for the line "winter is coming", it appears grim weather has not come early enough for the filming of Game of Thrones' next season.

Writers and producers for the series, David Benioff and DB Weiss, have suggested that the wait for the hit fantasy TV shows' next season may be even longer this time around.

HBO has traditionally aired each season in April, with season six airing a little later this year on April 24. But this could change next year.

"We don't have an air date yet but this year it will probably be a little bit later," Benioff and Weiss told the UFC Unfiltered podcast on June 5.

"We're starting it a bit later because at the end of the season: winter is here [and] that means that sunny weather doesn't really serve our purposes any more.

"We pushed everything down the line so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places."

They also confirmed rumours that there are only two more seasons left for the series but would not reveal how many episodes that would include, saying only that the seasons would be "shorter".

The series has now moved ahead of the books with the writer and producer confirming approximately 90 per cent of this season has moved beyond the novels.

But Benioff and Weiss were quick to point out that they are in contact with author George RR Martin, saying that on the grander scale the author agrees with what needs to be done to adapt the books to the television screen.

"He's a gentleman about it," they said.
