Gaire village to undergo free cancer screening

Women and girls of Gaire village in Central Province will have the opportunity to undergo free cancer screening.

The Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation (PNGCF) with Hiri Rural Local Level Government will carry out free cancer screening for breast and mouth cancer for both males and femalesĀ on July 27-28 at Gaire.

The two day program will be held at the Gaire United Reform Church and will include awareness on cervical and breast cancer and prevention through a series of workshops in which men are invited to attend.

This is the fourth program PNGCF will be conducting in 2016.

Other provinces visited so far under this awareness program were Morobe in February, Milne Bay in April and West New Britain in June.

PNGCF revealed that currently over 2,900 people have participated in the programs this year.

More than 400 of those people have been referred for further investigation at their local hospitals for early signs of either mouth or breast cancers.

A survey will also be carried out with participants to better understand their general knowledge of cancer, habits and behavioural trends within the province.

This provides PNGCF with current statistics to further educate and emphasise the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to reduce the risk of cancer.

Research by the PNG Institute of Medical research suggests that 1 in 10 deaths in PNG are because of cancer.

Chief executive officer of the PNGCF Dadi Toka Jr says there is a very high chance that cancer will affect you and your family.

Awareness on cancer prevention is the key message for PNGCF programs this year.

Smoking tobacco, chewing betelnut and consumption of alcohol are all scientifically proven to increase your chances of getting some type of cancer including mouth, breast and cervical cancers.

You can also reduce your cancer risk by eating healthy and exercising regularly.
