Frost is due to El Nino – Weather Office

The National Weather Service says it does not have weather stations in the Highlands Region to monitor weather activity.

This was the response this afternoon to LOOP News when we enquired about the current reports of frost in the Western Highlands.

He says this year a weather station was setup in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province however it was vandalized and the solar system was stolen.

Acting Assistant Director Jimmy Gomoga says with lack of funding and man power it is difficult for them to produce weather forecast for the highlands.

But he says the frost is an impact of the El Nino season.

He says temperatures will go as low as 14 degree Celsius.

Gomoga says frosting starts on the ground and it affects root crops.

“People will experience their crops dying and water sources will dry up,” he warned.
