First time MP calls for help for his people

The new Member for South Bougainville, Timothy Masiu in his first parliament sitting today brought to the attention of the government the plight of his people in Torokina.

He was concerned that despite the volcano eruption that caused destruction to the area some 2 months ago, it has received little or no assistance at all from the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the national government.

In calling for help from the government, he said ABG had no money to help his people recover from this natural disaster.

He therefore asked the Prime Minister if the government can come in to assist.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said with the change in climate, PNG was prone to various disasters as witnessed during the El Nino period this year and it was vital to have budgetary allocations every year to address disasters.

He further said he would give directions to the National Disaster Office today on what action they can take to assist the people of Tororkina in South Bougainville.

Meantime, member Masiu said he has utilized what little funds the electorate had to provide support to the people.
