Facebook update could be your primary news source

Inane chatter, endless baby photos, emerging international news - Facebook could be about to add a serious new string to its news-breaking bow.

Screenshots teased on Twitter have shown that Facebook is trialling a number of serious changes to its news feeds, with traditional, breaking news to be catalogued under separate headers to your usual, friend-populated feed.

According to the leaks, there will be feeds dedicated to "World & US News" (in America), "Sports" and "Food" amongst others.

Users' own, bespoke news feeds will remain their Facebook landing points, with the additional options to be clickable extras.

While Facebook has confirmed that it is trialling the additions, it has yet to confirm exactly when it will rolled out to the masses.

"People have told us they'd like options to see more stories on Facebook around specific topics they're interested in," a Facebook spokesperson reportedly told Mashable.

"We have been testing a few feeds for people to view more and different stories from people and Pages based on topic areas."
