Estimated 600,000 people affected by El Nino

The National Disaster Office says it estimates that mpre than 600, 000 people across the nation are being affected by drought and frost.

About 19 provinces have reported drought and frost for the Highlands, Telefomin District of Sandaun Province and Goilala in Central Province.

Six provinces in the Highlands region have all reported frost and drought impacting their food and water sources.

Simbu Province reported six deaths in the Waiye and Nilkande LLG of Kundiawa and Gembogl area.

Kundiawa hospital has scaled down its operations as it battles an outbreak of typhoid.

Some locals have resorted to charging people a fee for fetching water from local creeks.

Schools are also affected by a shortage of water.

In East New Britain, drought has caused a severe water shortage in Kokopo town. Now town authorities are rationing water and schools have closed.

New Ireland and Manus have also reported shortages of water as water sources dry up. Authorities are worried this poses a danger of outbreaks of diseases like typhoid.

Manus has reported that about 60,000 people have been affected.

Bougainville is also facing a shortage of food and water.

In the Southern Region, the Sirinumu dam level outside of Port Moresby is dropping and there are fears this will affect water and power supply.

In Oro Province there have been reports the dry season has affected Oro Bay and Tufi Wanigela Local Level Governments.

Goilala District in Central Province has reported the destruction of food gardens by frost and drought affecting water sources.

Kerema in Gulf Province also reported that the Don Bosco Technology School in the Ihu LLG closed its doors as the shortage of water takes a toll on students and teachers.
