Eruption warning for Rabaul lifted

The three-month-old volcanic eruption warning issued by the Rabaul Volcano Observatory in May was lifted yesterday.

In a statement, the RVO said the forecast had been cancelled after a drop in the accumulation of sulphuric dioxide from the Tavurvur volcano.

The alert to residents of Rabaul and nearby areas was issued in May due to the build up of volcanic related seismic activities in the north eastern areas of the volcano which were consistent with past eruptions.

Tavurvur is the volcano which erupted strongly in 1994,  21 years ago, causing the town of Rabaul to be virtually shut down and speeding the expansion of Kokopo, which has replaced Rabaul as the provincial capital.
