Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said there was a trend in the social media of giving wrong information and that could stir up trouble.
"I appeal to people who access other forms of media like social media and SMS not to give wrong information to their friends and relatives as some of the information is completely fabricated and incorrect.
"These (bits of) information can instead create fear or cause fighting in the city and this can lead to other major incidents," he warned.
He said this during a press conference at the metropolitan superintendent’s press conference yesterday.
He said there were conflicting reports of some Highlanders in vehicles going around trying to create problems in the city. This was checked and nothing of that nature was confirmed.
Similarly, he said there were reports of two people found dead under the Bumbu Bridge near the police barracks. That rumour was also a fabrication, he said.
He said the situation had returned to normal, apart from the one confirmed death and some stone throwing and vehicle windows were shattered but there was no looting.
He said many business houses opened their doors yesterday and today and people must not speculate or create false information as that would trigger other troubles.
