Doctors will scale down their operations starting tomorrow

Members of the National Doctors Association (NDA) will be scaling down operations throughout Papua New Guinea starting tomorrow.

NDA secretary Dr Sam Yockopua told Loop PNG that the decision was made today after a meeting with pilots, maritime workers and energy workers, as well as other concerned professionals.

“NDA will maintain the 21-day notice but our members throughout the country will be scaled down for emergencies only, until the outcome of the vote of no-confidence.

“Doctors will only attend to serious cases like ruptured spleens or surgeries. Other services like consultations will be shut down.

“Nurses will be working to assist people but when it comes to doctors, we will not be carrying out our duties.

“The citizens of this country will be greatly affected but we are mounting pressure on these politicians to think about the people who voted them into Parliament.

“This exercise is not for personal gain. We are all geared towards rescuing and salvaging Papua New Guinea,” stated Dr Yockopua.

A member of the group of professionals, lawyer Moses Murray, confirmed with Loop PNG that about 25-30 “professionals with consciences” were present in today’s meet.

Murray said there were three main points of concern at the gathering: The destruction to the constitution of Papua New Guinea by amending a lot of important laws; the total disregard of the principles of democracy and the PM not subjecting himself to the rule of law.

“We expect the Members who are now with the PM to exercise their God-given conscience to do the right thing and shift away from him. O’Neill must be removed from the floor of Parliament.”

Professionals from all walks of life are now gearing up but their plans will not include violence or destruction, or protests on the streets, said Murray.

They are also calling on all Christian groups throughout the country to pray for God’s guidance.

“This is a fight that is against some kind of evil in our society,” the lawyer stated.
