Diplomat accused murderer told to find lawyer

The man accused of the willful murder of former diplomat, Dennis Bebego has been told by the National Court to find legal representation.

Billy Sapsi Pokea of Suma village, Mendi, Southern Highlands Province was committed on May 19 to stand trial at the National Court.

It is alleged Pokea was responsible for the willful murder of Dennis Taylor Bebego, a former diplomat and  senior director at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade office on July 5, 2014.

Pokea appeared at the National Court on August 3 where he was instructed to find legal representation for his trial preparation to commence.

He returned to the National Court today (October 5) requesting for the court to endorse the Department of Foreign Affairs to release his entitlement and at the same time ask Nasfund to release his savings to assist find a lawyer.

The court told him that such requests cannot be endorsed and that he must find a lawyer before he returns to court for the next call over date on November 2.

Pokea remains in custody at Bomana. 

The late Dennis Taylor Bebego was from Gona village in the Oro Province.

Police reports allege the late Bebego was slashed to death in his office by Pokea, a long service public servant who knew Bebego well.

Police reports say he suffered fatal slashes to his head, right arm and leg, and stab wounds and died from loss of blood after struggling with Pokea behind closed doors.
