Deceased Facebook users will outnumber living ones by 2098

When a person passes away, their Facebook account can live on as an online memorial, or a digital celebration of their life, if you prefer.

But the social network's policy on deceased users could come back to haunt it many years from now, when the dead outnumber the living.

According to calculations by PHD researcher Hachem Saddiki, deceased Facebook users will overtake their alive counterparts this century - by 2098, to be precise.

The University of Massachusetts student came to this conclusion after studying the rate that Facebook is growing and measuring it against death-rate data from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Saddiki's research was backed by Fusion.net, which described Facebook as on the way to becoming a "digital graveyard".

If that is indeed the way it ends up going, visiting Facebook in the year 2098 could be an eerie experience, but probably no more so than a trip to the digital ghost town that is Google+ in 2016.
