Dead body taken from foreign vessel

On Sunday January 7 police in Lae received reports that there was a dead body on board a foreign vessel.

The ship namely MV Apostolos Kontantaras was en route to Australia from China when an accident occurred in board the vessel around on Thursday,  February 4.

Reports state that the ship was 260 miles off the coast from Wewak when the deceased of Filipino origin was on duty at the time and was hit by a pulley which he was using.

The pulley cracked and hit him in the head in this tragic accident.

The man was administered first aid but died of his injuries a short while after being struck.

The cargo vessel's captain raised the alarm with PNG authorities and was directed to Lae waters.

Meanwhile, Lae Police Detectives boarded a smaller vessel and went on the ship where the crime scene was visited and police removed the body from the ship to Lae International Hospital.

A postmortem will be conducted before the shipping company repatriates the body back to Philippines.
