With the Yu Em Khax auditions running well into the afternoon, Lae is seeing more dance crews trying out for a spot in the heat.
The Shrykes Crew PNG is one of the first to have made it through; now waiting to impress judges in the main auditions.
Formed in 2008, the crew is made up of four young men, Glen Yali, Craig Yali, Kevinson Joe and Nason Tande.
Over the years, the four have entertained mostly at formal functions and have Yu Em Khax to thank for the opportunity to try out in a competition.
Glen, the crew's leader, said Lae hardly has such opportunities.
"There are many dance crews here in Lae but big competitions are based only in Port Moresby. This one in particular has come to Lae and includes the dance category so we decided to participate. This is our opportunity," he says.
"Dance is our passion, it is our self-expression," Glen adds.
The crew is named after a street at Cassowary Road, where they first came together to form what is now the Shrykes Crew PNG.
