Committee to showcase PNG’s traditional designs to global community

The PNG Fashion Week’s main objective is to put PNG on the map with the country’s traditional designs and patterns being incorporated in fashion and arts.

The Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC) backed this idea with the presentation of a K25,000 cheque to the PNGFW organising committee recently. This was to host PNG’s first ever Fashion Week Event.

During the cheque presentation, MRDC’s general manager for commercial, Clifford Kasi, said: “We must provide a platform to empower the creative efforts of our local designers and artists and set them on the right path in their journey to create beautiful garments, drawing their inspirations from the vast diverse cultural heritage of PNG”.

“This sector is a sleeping giant. It is the other half of tourism that is not adequately cultivated to reach its fullest potential, therefore it is important to raise awareness to strengthen the sector‘s potential for development,” the GM stated.

PNGFW promotes small to medium enterprises by acting as a catalyst for the fashion industry to grow in the business arena and create an income for the local designers, the MRDC’s statement read.

PNGFW 2016 Event will kick off with workshops from August 17-19 at the Holiday Inn Hotel, followed by the Fashion Show on August 20 at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby.

Part of the proceeds from the fashion show will go towards supporting the Hospital Poroman Foundation and The Roger Hau’ofa Medical Appeal.
