China delivers Centre to PNG

The Chinese government made a right decision to build an international convention centre for PNG, says Li Ruiyou, its Ambassador to the country.

Ruiyou made the remarks during handover ceremony of the centre to the PNG government on Tuesday evening in Port Moresby.

He said PNG is in real need of such facility in its growing engagement in the world and regional affairs and the Chinese people have come on board to deliver this project to PNG as a token of friendship for the past 40 years.

“We are here today celebrating the progress of 40 years of diplomatic ties and witnessing the grand launching of the International Convention Centre.

“These outcomes have become possible thanks to many people’s continuous support and unremitting efforts in the last four decades.”

Built by China Jiangxi International at a cost of $US 496 million (K1572.11m), the International Convention Centre has 9,700 sqm of dedicated meeting space inside: a central auditorium, a 750-seat theatre, large plenary rooms, a state-of-the art media centre, a circular 48-seat boardroom, a formal dining room and, on the second floor, a collection of breakout rooms.

Ruiyou added that China is keen to work with PNG and promote bilateral relationship to a next level by giving each other dignity and pride.

The project was the biggest in the Pacific by the People’s Republic of China.
