Child dies from suspected measles on Tasman Island

There are reports of a measles outbreak in Bougainville’s most remote island, Tasman.

One child is reportedly dead and two others are in critical condition.

The Tatou health care, a private clinic in Buka town said they received phone calls and radio messages from the island and have alerted the provincial health authorities in Buka.

Anne Marie Momea from Tatou health care said the outbreak started last month.

“We have alerted authorities and they said to utilize MV Rapois but there is no fuel for the ship,” Moma said.

Tasman Island is Bougainville’s last frontier before the Pacific Ocean opens up in front of you.

“Our sick are getting treatment from the nearby Pelau clinic, plus rice and sugar from the Solomon Islands and medical supplies,” Momea said.

There are claims Tasman Island was missed out in a recent measles immunisation program on Bougainville.
