Brothers nabbed over sorcery killing

Two brothers from the Dimbapugl area of Chimbu Province have been arrested and charged for the Wil murder of a 37-year-old woman.

Provincial Police Commander Albert Beli says Konie 37 and Min Paul 32, went into hiding on September 4th after they stoned a woman to death suspected of practicing sorcery.

He says police investigations revealed that the brothers suspected their father and sister were killed as a result of sorcery.

“They were watching her and finally they went to her house where they accused her and eventually killed her by bashing her and stoning her,” Beli said.

The men were arrested last week after police conducted a raid in Dimbapugl.

Beli says he is concerned at the number of crimes committed as a result of people believing in sorcery.

He says in the New Year, police will commence an awareness exercise to help people understand that sorcery is a belief that cannot be proven.
