Bring culprits of Dr Rongap Snr’s death to justice: NDA

Medical officers at the ANGAU Memorial Hospital in Lae have been called upon to withdraw their services until those who killed Dr Alphonse Rongap Snr are brought to justice.

“They will only stand by for emergencies,” National Doctors Association (NDA) secretary Dr Sam Yockopua told Loop PNG.

“He (Dr Rongap Snr) was shot at close range by criminals around 10pm last night. He was pronounced dead when taken to the ANGAU Memorial Hospital.

“They were trying to rob him and take his vehicle, which eventually resulted in his death.”

The incident reportedly occurred along Backroad in Lae.

The late doctor, from East Sepik Province, was a senior paediatrician as well as the vice-president of the NDA.

“At the moment we are shocked, frustrated and angry,” said Dr Yockopua.

“This incident is a reflection of the breakdown in the civil society that we are living in.”

Members of the NDA will conduct a meeting this afternoon then fly to Lae in an effort to reach a solution to their current situation.

The association and the health profession have passed their condolences to the late Senior Rongap’s family for the loss of a “great person, doctor, union leader, teacher, mentor, husband, father, grandfather and a dedicated children’s doctor”.
