Breaking boundaries

Kokopo-based Citi link Taxi Services prides in itself as Papua New Guinea’s first ever taxi service to introduce the use of eftpos machines in cabs.

Surprisingly, this was a suggestion that the owner of the business himself made to banking officials in Kokopo, East New Britain Province.

It was only after the banking officials in Kokopo had brought this suggestion over to the banking authorities in Port Moresby that it was then decided that the use of eftpos machines in taxis should be allowed.

When addressing the participants at the BSP road show on Saturday, Jack Walom, the owner of Citi link Taxi Services, portrayed himself as an earnest businessman who would grab any opportunity to expand his business.

“In 2011, the smart banking package was not yet introduced but I was already asking for their products,” recalls Walom.

These products include phone and internet banking that are in use today.

“At the moment, I’m using online services and that is why you hardly see me at the counter.

“As I grew my business, BSP came in and that’s when I left other financial institutions…’’ he further added.

After building a good reputation with the bank, Walom was given the opportunity to expand his business through the smart business banking package. From a single taxi, he now has 24 operating vehicles and he continues to lodge countless loans with BSP.

Although Walom is an accountant by profession, he admitted to facing similar challenges faced by any ordinary business man or woman.  Despite all these, he managed to pull through due to discipline.

Before ending his presentation, Walom urged those present to manage cash well and invest in things that they would expect to see returns from.
