Book on bail launched

A book on The law and Principles in bail in PNG has been launched in Port Moresby by a lawyer of the Public Solicitors office.

Practicing criminal law for the past eight years, it took Leslie Mamu almost the same number of years to complete the book.

It was launched in Port Moresby on Wednesday night by Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika in the presence of UPNG Chancellor Stephen Pokawin, PNG Constitutional and Law Reform Commission Secretary Dr Eric Kwa and members of the legal fraternity in a small but significant ceremony.

The law and Principles of bail in PNG is the third book Mamu has written. He is now working on three more books. Other books he has written are Living your dreams, a book aimed at students and The Human Resource.

Mamu said it took him seven years to write the book. “I intentionally allowed myself to grasp the area of bail and understand it. Not only about reading about it (bail) and understanding it but actually practicing it.

“It’s better to make a book that is based on experience and not written by someone who has just recently graduated from the university,” he added.

Mamu said it is an interesting area in criminal law and his main motivation behind writing a book on bail is to contribute towards developing the local jurisprudence.

Jurisprudence is science of the law. It is the practical science of giving a wise interpretation to the laws, and making a just application of them to cases as they arise.

“Books like these go a long way in assisting and contributing to the materials, text for lawyers and also court use. It can simply assist a lawyer in defending clients charged with criminal offenses,” he went on to say.

The book is dedicated to his late mother, Edinah Nalir Mamu. Copies of the book are going for K200 and can be purchased from Leslie via email: lmamu@publicsolicitor.gov.pg or blesliemamu@gmail.com.
