Battle of daily life to survive

Prices of daily food items like rice, Ox &Palm and Kwik kai chicken pieces continue to increase in Port Moresby shops.

LOOP News visited five shops today to compare prices and speak to customers about their experiences.

The price of a 10kg packet of Roots rice ranges between K34.40 and K39.50. Ox & Palm tinned meat is currently on special in two shops selling at K9.95. It is normally sold for K12. In small tucker shops it could cost about K14.

A small can of Ocean Blue tinned fish costs between K2 – K2.20

A packet of chicken pieces will cost between K15 and K17.

One family told us that chicken is like a special food they get to eat only during pay week and at any other times they survive on tinned fish and if they are lucky they get to have fresh fish.

“This morning we went to Koki market early in the morning to buy some fresh and cheap fish if any was available,” they say.

Elsie Posu says her husband earns about K500 however it does not seem to be enough.

She says even if she buys a 10kg bag of rice it does not last and before pay week, she has to find more money to buy food.

“I have to borrow money from people and I am ashamed of saying this but it is the reality and most people do it too. Times are hard,” Posu says.
