Awareness workshop for stakeholders on SDGs underway

An awareness workshop to equip stakeholders on a better understanding of United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is underway in Port Moresby.

The two day workshop from October 6-7 is facilitated by the Department of National Planning and Monitoring in partnership with the UN Development Program.

The workshop provides participants with a better understanding of the SDGs and the way they can be taken forward in Papua New Guinea.

Participants include representatives from relevant government departments, civil society groups and business community.

The goal is to share information on the Global Agenda 2030 and the SDGs, brainstorm integrated ways the 17 SDGs can be taken forward in PNG.

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Roy Trivedy said the stakeholders must know their roles in working together to achieve the SDGs.

Trivedy said the government agencies must target priority areas as the SDGs are all about improving the lives of the people.

National Planning secretary Hakaua Harry said PNG must to learn from the experiences of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and work together to move forward towards achieving the SDGs.

Hakaua said there must be an understanding between SDGs and government plans in order to achieve the goals.
