Aussie K5.5m police building opens in Lae

Police Minister Robert Atiyafa officially opened the K5.5 million police administration building in Lae a short time ago.

Atiyafa said the building represents Australia's contribution to policing through the partnership program.

He said the building was timely as Lae was the industrial capital of the country and business was also booming.

"Lae is fast growing and we need to build the capacity of our policemen and women. This will also mean logistical support and resources as well," he said.

He thanked the Australian Government through the Papua New Guinea-Australia Policing Partnership Program for sponsoring this unique building, that will serve the city and it's people.

He said with many economical and social changes taking shape, as well as the increased business activities, law and order issues also increased and police could not be there all the time but they did  ensure law was respected.
He said with the current trend of a booming population, they did  not have the numerical strength proportionate with the population growth.
The building was completed within nine months after the launching last November.
