Asian businessman slain in Madang

An expatriate has been shot dead during a robbery in Madang on Wednesday.

The victim was with his friends and waiting at a drive way to enter a shop when he was shot by armed criminals.

The attackers took off with a substantial amount of money and the vehicle.

Momase police boss Chief Superintendent Nema Mondiai was baffled at the manner in which the victim was shot.

He has  contacted Madang police to have the matter placed under intense investigation.

Mr Mondiai, who is also the Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for Momase,  said this was a very serious crine which occured in broad daylight and needed to be fully investigated.

Police allege that at the close of business on Wednesday, the victim, of Asian origin and his three friends left their shop and were visiting another shop.

When they arrived in the driveway, they were held up by four armed men, who forced them out of their vehicle.

The armed men searched the vehicle and stole the money bag and the vehicle, a CRV. One of the criminals shot the victim, from Malaysia and in his mid 20s, who was lying on the driveway at close range and fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to Modilon General Hospital and placed on life support. But he  succumbed to the injuries sustained in the early hours of next day.

Police recovered the vehicle without the money and the suspects later. The investigation is continuing.
