Armed men rob MAF terminal at Madang airport

SIX armed men used a motorised dinghy to escape after holding up staff at the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) terminal at Madang Airport this morning making off with K20,000 in cash.

A  security guard and a witness, who was on duty in the morning at the MAF terminal said the robbery occurred after the gate to the terminal had open for business and the first customers were going into the terminal area。

According to the security guard, a man earlier pretended to be a customer going in to purchase an airline ticket, and while he went into the office held up the MAF Manager who was arranging to do banking

The guard said he was manning the gate and did not know what happened inside, when suddenly three gang members who were outside pulled out their pistols and demanded everyone lie faced-down on the ground while they checked their pockets and collected all the cash worth more than K20, 000 from the passengers who were scheduled to travel to Simbai.

“ I was on my own and couldn’t do anything so I ran into the Manager’ office when the other gang member ran out,

“I tried grabbing him but he broke off his shirt and ran off with his other three friends,” the guard said.

He said the three men ran down to the beach front with cash of K20,000 and got on the awaiting motorized boat  with another accomplice  and escaped.

He said Police officers and his colleague guards arrived late to the scene。

Madang Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Jacob Singura when contacted by PNG Loop said he will make a detailed report later when he collects information from his officers.
