Argentina willing to help PNG host APEC summit

The Government of Argentina is ready to give a helping hand to Papua New Guinea host the 2018 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member states in 2018.

That is the assurance given by Argentine new ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Hugo Javier Gobbi.

He made this comments on the occasion of his presentation of credentials to the Governor General Sir Michael Ogio, on Tuesday.

“The APEC Summit which you will host in 2018 is an example of the crucial role that your country is playing in the region.  Attended by the heads of state of the US, China, Japan and Russia, among others, the APEC summit is an extraordinary opportunity to show the world your capacity to organize a major event,” Javier Gobbi said.

“We are confident that it will be a great success. The Government of Argentina is ready to help in any way your country considers appropriate.”

Both nations established diplomatic relations in 1976, one year after PNG become an independent state.

The Argentine Ambassador said, we can both learn from each other, particularly on our respective regions; the proposal for signing an agreement to eliminate visa requirements for diplomatic and official passports to foster better contacts; and the exploration of areas of cooperation in sectors of mutual interest, such as agriculture, fisheries, energy or the formation of young diplomats through the teaching of Spanish, bear witness to that interest.
