APEC 42nd transportation working group meeting this week

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 42nd transportation working group meeting (TWGM) is set to get underway this week in Port Moresby from April 4-7.

Over 200 participants from 21 countries will be involved in the discussions that will cover all modes of transportation and are highly technical in nature.

The Transportation Working Group (TPTWG) has four main experts groups, which are aviation, maritime, land and intermodal and intelligent transport systems.

Under the main experts groups are seven sub-groups. There’ll also be side meetings held on specific matters, such as women in transportation and APEC port services network.

The meeting provides PNG’s transport sector agencies and other line agencies the opportunity to take ownership of the transportation development priorities within APEC.

This will see where PNG can also develop its transportation policy priorities and programs in line with the APEC agenda outcomes in 2016 and 2017, as we journey towards PNG’s host year in 2018.

Department of Transport Secretary Roy Mumu said PNG has increased participation and involvement in the APEC TWGM and processes over the last two years.

Mumu said they now see the need to leverage the country’s domestic transportation priorities with that of APEC.

“We hope that by hosting the meeting in PNG, our officials will have the opportunity to see APEC firsthand at work.

“They can capture APEC transportation outcomes in our domestic policy priorities and programs in the years ahead,” Mumu said.
