Another female student rushed to hospital

UPNG staff claim another female UPNG student was rushed to the hospital after being allegedly assaulted by a number of police officers this morning.

This happened at the main Waigani campus when the students tried to peacefully march to the parliament to air their grievances to their MPs.

“During the stampede when police were firing tear gas, she fell down so was one of the last students to run for safety towards the sigi base,” a group of visibly shaken students told Loop PNG. “A group of policemen grabbed hold of her and starting kicking and punching her.

"A Uniforce Security guard tried to shield her from them but they punched him on the jaw as well.” The guard, as well as a couple of UPNG staff, confirmed with Loop PNG the alleged assault on not only the female student, but the entire group that morning.

The female student fell unconscious after the assault. A couple of students and guards poured water on her to revive her, then rushed her to the Port Moresby General Hospital.

NCD metropolitan superintendent Ben Turi told Loop PNG that they only fired tear gas, but Loop PNG was shown a number of empty shells that were collected after the incident.

A car was smashed by officers while trying to take an injured student to the hospital, a staff said.
