Agiru Cup up for grab in Wabag’s Mioks vs Wigmen fixture

The recently introduced Agiru Cup will coincide with round 14 of the Digicel Cup in Wabag as Enga Mioks and Hela Wigmen tussle for double honours on Sunday.

The two teams played the inaugural cup and a cash price of K5000 during the third round of the Digicel Cup in Mendi but it was decided to be replayed after drawing 12-12.

Under the concept that the Enga Provincial Government introduced, the two teams will play for the Agiru Cup during the first Digicel Cup fixture annually.

Sir Peter Ipatas said his government had come up with the idea in recognition of the leader who had contributed a lot to the development of his province.

“The late Anderson Agiru was one of the greatest sons of Hela. He has done a lot during his tenure as governor to the country, Hela and Enga Provinces. He deserves more than this for his outstanding contribution particularly to the well-being of the people of Enga,” he said.

Sir Peter said he was expecting a capacity crowd at the Aipus oval this Sunday to witness the two teams tussling for the double awards.

Enga provincial police commander Superintendent George Kakas said there would not be any problem on Sunday as rugby league fans and the general public in the province were looking forward to the game.

The home team which is running third on the Digicel Cup points ladder with 19 points behind Mt Hagen Eagles who are on second place with 21 points will play their last home game this weekend against fifth placed Hela Wigmen.
