Academic doctors express grievances over industrial claims

National academic doctors employed at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), University of PNG have expressed grievances over delayed industrial claims.

The doctors have raised concerns over the non-implementation of the 2014-2016 National Doctors MOA Industrial Awards.

Their outstanding issues contained in the Industrial Awards are the non-implementation of the award and the Home Ownership Scheme.

They have not benefited from the Industrial Award and plan to take industrial action if their grievances are not met.

The doctors threaten to walk-off their teaching job if nothing positive happens by Wednesday, October 12.

National Doctors Association (NDA) president Dr James Naipao said these doctors are members of NDA therefore the association will support what course of action they’ll take when the deadline lapses.

The issue has been raised with NDA, SMHS Administration, SMHS Staff, Department of Personnel Management, UPNG Administration and Department of Health.

Naipao confirmed that a concrete outcome is yet to be reached.

NDA has been in dialogue with all stakeholders from the beginning regarding this issue and has continued to maintain communication as the medium to address this issue.

Naipao added that it is disappointing for these national doctors who have committed to the human resource health training for PNG and their commitment to this cause must be commended.

He said the Government must act immediately to address the issue to avoid jeopardizing the Taurama Campus academic year.

The conclusion of the current award will expire at the end of December 2016.
